Carmilla

One could hardly expect someone like Flora Lawson to resist the urge to adapt Le Fanu’s Carmilla into a stage play. Given the dearth of vampiress roles, Mrs. Lawson frequently has to adapt in order to play the type of role she obviously relishes.

I must say, this work — perhaps because of the lack of gender–swapping — is much more successful than last season’s Lady Ruthven. Mrs. Lawson’s talents elevated the role of Lady Ruthven, however, her turn as Carmilla was sublime.

I will say, however, that perhaps one shouldn’t expect to see so many young ladies giggling in the front row. The subject matter verges on indelicate at times, and I would expect more delicate sensibilities to have issue with such content. That said, for viewers who can handle strong subjects, Carmilla is an excellent adaptation. Laura’s — dare I say? — seduction is handled very tastefully, despite the sapphic overtones. An excellent cautionary tale.

Recommended, with reservations for content if one has delicate sensibilities. Note to concerned parents: Mrs. Lawson is reputed to be a lady of excellent character.
